Therein Lies The Rub

In 2008, Jonathan set upon combining spices and ingredients and, after 100 days, hence The Rub was born. The Rub is a blend of spicy, salty, sweet and savory spices all in balance, created for the passionate palette for maximum flavor. While The Rub literally refers to this special ingredient, it shares a deeper meaning; taken from Shakespeare (“To be or not to be…”), The Rub represents the very physical and tangible aspects of Jonathan’s restaurant, as well as the emotional connection and passion for it.


Jonathan's The Rub is a family affair. Our restaurant and catering company is located in the Memorial Villages and chef and owner, Jonathan Levine, works alongside his son, Sam, and daughter, Jessica. Not to mention, everyone else who works with and dines with us is like family, too. We like to think we break the mold of Houston restaurants by doing our own thing using bold flavors and presenting a diverse menu that are more than trends.

Self-proclaimed as the oldest line cook in Houston, Jonathan opened Jonathan’s The Rub with the purpose and mission of providing guests with excellent food in an unmatched dining experience; a mission that Jonathan passionately maintains today. You'll notice our restaurant features an open kitchen where diners can see, smell and hear the behind-the-scenes events of Jonathan and the other cooks preparing their dishes. (You'll have to experience it for yourself.) Jonathan's The Rub is a place for you to visit, feel comfortable, be yourself and, hopefully, leave with a few more friends and a satisfied appetite.

We are confident that lunch is the highlight of every Memorial High School student. We have served the students at MHS since 2011. Students interested in placing a Jonathan’s The Rub lunch order should call the restaurant no later than 30 minutes before his or her lunch period. Lunch includes a drink and rub fries.

If you haven’t noticed by now, nothing we do here is standard, which is why we don’t have a standard catering menu.
Our catering team customizes every aspect of your event, from menu creation to service levels, for private dinner parties, banquet gatherings, boardroom catering and more.

Our restaurant's private dining space accommodates up to 35 guests and is available for reservation any day of the week. We can come to you, too. As the preferred caterer for Memorial Village for more than 10 years, we take pride in serving all of Houston.



Purchase a 16oz bottle of our signature Rub next time you come in to visit us. We cannot give away our secret ingredient list, but know that it's the highest quality rub you'll ever have in your spice cabinet. Use it to pre-season your seafood or steaks or sprinkle it on your vegetables after they have left the grill. The perfect balance of sweet, spicy, savory and salty, it’s pure taste-bud satisfaction on anything.
